  7.     Years ago, says Liv Ullmann, relatives setting off from
  8. Norway's fjords for a better life in the New World were thought
  9. to be "brave and strong." Today similar dreams are "ridiculed
  10. and shamed." The actress made that comparison last week in an
  11. emotional speech at a Hong Kong refugee camp, where thousands
  12. of Vietnamese boat people are facing a forced return to their
  13. homeland. It was one of many visits she has made to Southeast
  14. Asian camps since 1980 for international organizations, and it
  15. miffed local officials, who accused her of being a do-gooder
  16. who only came to criticize.
