- Years ago, says Liv Ullmann, relatives setting off from
- Norway's fjords for a better life in the New World were thought
- to be "brave and strong." Today similar dreams are "ridiculed
- and shamed." The actress made that comparison last week in an
- emotional speech at a Hong Kong refugee camp, where thousands
- of Vietnamese boat people are facing a forced return to their
- homeland. It was one of many visits she has made to Southeast
- Asian camps since 1980 for international organizations, and it
- miffed local officials, who accused her of being a do-gooder
- who only came to criticize.
